Top Engineering Trends to Watch in 2020

The lifestyle and behavior of generations changes dominantly by the evolution of technology and engineering. During the 90s and early 2000s, millennials have experienced the drastic evolution of technology allowing them to experience different expectations and opportunities. Engineering and tech trends have changed a lot throughout the last two decades. They evolve every year now with a rapid pace.

2019 was quite a year for engineering and technology. According to MIT technology review, Bill Gates suggested some of the engineering inventions of 2019 that have affected the world in better ways. Most of his predictions were related to health, which includes: predicting preemies, gut probe in a pill, custom cancer vaccines, and ECG smart watches.

Similarly, different experts have predicted the new trends of engineering in 2020 for various sectors. All of them settle on the following common new engineering trends:

#1 Internet of Things (IoT)

As we all know, internet has become an important part of our daily life. Nowadays, mostly, only humans directly interact with the internet. But the trend of using internet by every other device is increasing day by day which is referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). Just like human-human interaction over internet, objects are being enabled to interact with other objects without human interference.

Things (machines/devices) would be able to talk with other things without any human intervention and this is increasing at a rapid rate. The technology evolved at a rapid pace in the past few years. From IoT enabled smart homes to IoT enabled smart factories and industries, the technology has enabled various objects to communicate by themselves.  According to Statista, the total number of IoT connected devices will reach to 30.73 billion devices by the end of 2020. The market cap of IoT devices is going to reach to 248 billion USD by the end of 2020.

#2 Multi Experience Development

According to industry analyst and researcher Gartner, the interaction of humans with digital world will be changed significantly in 2020 and onward. According to him, human interaction with digital world is changing at a rapid pace. Digital technologies like Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality is changing significantly. The shift of this combination in interaction will pave the way for Multi Model experience.

#3 Electric Vehicles (EVs)

We have seen rapid growth of hybrid vehicles in past few years. Tesla has made the Cybertruck in 2019 which is a commercial electric vehicle with battery backup. Industry analysts predicts the technology growth for electric vehicles and according to them it will keep on increasing in 2020.  According to a study by IEA (Global EV Outlook 2019), the number of electrical vehicles will be increased to almost 23 million worldwide by the end of 2020 as compared to only 5 million in 2018. The efficiency of electrical vehicles will be enhanced by improving battery charging, and energy management.

#4 Battery Energy Storage System

In 2018, the market of battery energy storage system had a size of 4.9 gigawatts. According to renowned GlobalData, the global market share of BESS will be increased to twenty-three gigawatts. The trends of installing battery energy storage systems among consumers are also increasing at a rapid pace as the growth of smart grid technology has been increased significantly in past few years. Moreover, 2020 is also predicted to be an interesting year for sustainable energy.

Today many countries across the world are focusing more on energy storage system growth than they ever did in the past. Countries like USA, China, India, and Germany has announced several policies and strategies to support battery energy storage systems (BESS).

#5 Edge Computing

To bring data storage and computation near to the place where it is needed the most, edge computing has been proved to be more useful than cloud computing. Experts have predicted the evident growth of edge computing by the end of 2020. The market size prediction of edge computing is expected to rise to nine billion USD in near future. According to a renowned survey, around sixty percent of mobility decision makers have edge computing on their mind for next one year. Also, according to many surveys, the edge cloud services will be expected to grow by %50 and there will be fifty billion connected devices by the end of 2030.

2020 seems to be an interesting year for engineering and tech industries. What do you think? Share your thoughts with us in the comment box.
